LSAT Tip of the Week Analytical Reasoning Practice Problem #2

LSAT Tip of the Week Analytical Reasoning Practice Problem #2 LSAT Law School Blog This week, we will focus on an example of how to setup an analytical reasoning (logic games) question. Our practice question will be from the June 2007 LSAT. This is Section 1, Question 18. There are exactly three recycling centers in Rivertown: Center 1, Center 2, and Center 3. Exactly five kinds of material are recycled at these recycling centers: glass, newsprint, plastic, tin, and wood. Each recycling center recycles at least two but no more than three of these kinds of material. The following conditions must hold: Any recycling center that recycles wood also recycles newsprint. Every kind of material that Center 2 recycles is also recycled at Center 1. Only one of the recycling centers recycles plastic, and that recycling center does not recycle glass. First, we know that there are 3 sections and that each recycles at least 2 but no more than 3. 1 _ _ (_) 2 _ _ (_) 3 _ _ (_) The options are glass, newsprint, plastic, tin, and wood: G N P T W Rule 1: If it recycles W it also recycles N, so: W - N N - W (The latter holds to be true since it is called a contrapositive). Rule 2: If in Center 2 then also in Center 1, so: 2 - 1 1-2 (Again, this is the contrapositive) This rule has a hidden point as well, it states that if Center 2 recycles three materials, Center 1 will recycle those three as well. If Center 2 recycles 2 materials, Center 1 will recycle those 2 as well. Anything 2 has, 1 does as well. Rule 3: Only one P, and that center does not recycle G. This allows us to infer that P cannot be in Center 2 because of Rule 2. Let’s try question 18: Which one of the following could be an accurate account of all the kinds of material recycled at each recycling center in Rivertown? (A) Center 1: newsprint, plastic, wood; Center 2: newsprint, wood; Center 3: glass, tin, wood (B) Center 1: glass, newsprint, tin; Center 2: glass, newsprint, tin; Center 3: newsprint, plastic, wood (C) Center 1: glass, newsprint, wood; Center 2: glass, newsprint, tin; Center 3: plastic, tin (D) Center 1: glass, plastic, tin; Center 2: glass, tin; Center 3: newsprint, wood (E) Center 1: newsprint, plastic, wood; Center 2: newsprint, plastic, wood; Center 3: glass, newsprint, tin We aren’t given any new rules here, so we will just use the rules we have already pulled out. Rule #1: If they recycle W they must have N too. Option (a) does not have both, we eliminate this. Going through the rest we know that no other options violate rule 1, so let’s move on to rule 2. Rule #2: If it’s in center 2, it must also be in center 1. Option (c) is missing tin in center 1, so we eliminate this. Going through the rest we do not see any other violations of this rule, so let’s move on to rule 3. Rule #3: Only one center can recycle plastic and that one cannot have glass. We see that in option (d) both glass and plastic is being recycled in the same center, so we can cross this off. We also see that option (e) violates this as two centers are recycling plastic. We are now left with (b), which is our correct answer.

New Private STD Testing Service Geared Towards Students Launched

New Private STD Testing Service Geared Towards Students Launched pexels.com “Our research shows consumers believe that the ability to purchase certain tests and receive results would facilitate better communication with their physicians and improve their health. Greater access to accurate testing, diagnoses, and treatment is particularly critical in sexual and reproductive health, where medications can often quickly cure many common STDs,” said Cathy Doherty, senior vice president and group executive, clinical franchise solutions and marketing, Quest Diagnostics. “With these services, Quest is meeting consumers where they are, empowering them to access and take actions from diagnostic insights to improve their health.” Part of the issue that Quest Diagnostics is trying to combat is the stigma surrounding STD’s that make young adults hesitant or uncomfortable to discuss STD’s or get tested for them by medical professionals. “Too many people are not being screened for STDs, and one reason is a reluctance to discuss risk with healthcare providers,” said Damian “Pat” Alagia, III, MD, FACOG, FACS, an OB/GYN and medical director of woman’s health for Quest Diagnostics. “Services that empower individuals to access STD testing extend physician-based care so more people can receive the evaluation and treatment they need.” To get more information about the service, check out QuestDirect.QuestDiagnostics.com.

Orange County Tutor 5 Ways to Make Next Summer Better

Orange County Tutor 5 Ways to Make Next Summer Better Tips From an Orange County Tutor: 5 Ways to Make Next Summer Better Tips From an Orange County Tutor: 5 Ways to Make Next Summer Better High school and college students are probably thrilled to have some time off in the summer to do nothing at all. However, they’re all looking at their first week of school. Some students are prepared to go back to school and tackle new assignments while others are in a total panic. Also, some students may be entirely prepared academically but may also be starting the school year on an empty gas tank, so to speak. If this past summer wasn’t spent quite the right way, students are encouraged to look back at what worked and what didn’t so that next summer can be more successful. Below are five ways to make next summer better from a private Orange County tutor. 1 Didn’t finish all those summer assignments? Not finishing assignments is a fairly common problem for AP students and can lead to a rigorous and stressful school year. At this point, AP students will be spending several Saturdays catching up on lost summer study but there is still hope for next year. Although it’s easier said than done, Advanced Placement students are encouraged to take a week to rest and relax and then get those summer assignments out of the way early on. If there are any problems along the way, they will still have time to get help from a tutor or work over those assignments with their study group (READ: 5 Things That Might Surprise You About College). 2 Feel overly mentally fatigued? This is also a common issue for college prep and university students alike. Although summer school and assignments are a necessary part of many students’ lives, it’s important to take a mental break. Students who find themselves in this position should consider taking some time off next summer to do something different. Light exercise, road trips, and time outdoors are all good ways to relax the brain and be prepared for the year ahead. 3 Are you broke? This is generally an issue for college students who will rely on their checkbooks to support their social and entertainment activities. The easiest way to fix this problem is to find a full-time job next summer. Some students will want to take summer school or an internship that takes up their time but others will spend a good portion of the summer on the couch. It’s a lot easier to focus on a full-time job during summer months than to run from class to a part time job every week of the school year. 4 Feeling a lack of growth? Some students may be spared from financial and academic issues but simply feel they haven’t grown as much as they would like. There are tons of activities a student can do over the summer to get that all around eye-opening experience they hoped their college years would provide. Next summer, consider studying abroad for a month and discover a whole new culture. Learn a new language abroad or at home. Volunteer for an organization that requires travel or experiences outside of the comfort zone of home. There are so many things that students can do, especially in college, in order to broaden their horizons (READ: Tips From an Irvine English Tutor: 5 Tips to Help You be a Great Student Writer). 5 Didn’t get those exams out of the way? Attempting to study for standardized exams during the school year can be tough considering all of the other assignments students already have on their plate. Although high school seniors don’t really have a choice but to trudge on, sophomores and juniors still have the option of taking tests multiple times. Students are encouraged to save themselves the trouble of starting from scratch when it comes to standardized exam prep and arrange to take a test prep course next summer. Whether it’s the SAT, ACT, or GRE, summer prep can be a life saver when the school year comes rolling around. Now that school is officially back in full-swing, its important to stay not fall behind. Huge surge in school expulsions - Tutor Hunt Blog

Huge surge in school expulsions New government report reveals huge surge in school expulsions New government report reveals huge surge in school expulsionsSchoolsAstonishing new figures from the department of education show that there has been a 15% rise in the number of pupils who were expelled from state schools between 2015-16 and 2016-17. The figures rose from 6,685 to 7,720 - disturbingly high statistics for something so serious as expulsion, even though they represent the whole of the UK. A 15% rise in expulsions over 2 years is a precipitous increase, and many head teachers have said this is due to cuts to recent cuts in mental health and behaviour programmes. Government representatives have said that expulsion should only be used as a last resort - but one would think that it is always the last option anyway, since there is of course nothing further the school can do once the pupil has been permanently excluded. The figures correspond to 0.1% of the school population being expelled a year, up from 0.08% the previous year. While this percentage looks reassuringly low, it should be noted that this actually amounts to somewhere around 40 pupils per day being expelled. The concerning matter is what happens to these pupils after they have been permanently excluded. It can be hard to gain admittance to a school at the best of times, and with the cleanest of introductory letters - trying to get into a new school after having just being expelled from another may well prove to be a challenge. Of course the longer it takes, the further behind the pupil will get in their studies - and even if they somehow manage to be accepted into another school with convenient alacrity, they may find their new peers studying different parts of the syllabus. There is of course an argument that no pupil should ever be expelled. Upon accepting a pupil, that school takes on the responsibility for their education - by expelling the pupil they are abnegating that responsibility, and passing the issue onto someone else. The reality is however that some pupils are just so disruptive that they dominate each lesson, and unduly impinge upon their colleagues` learning. In this case there can perhaps be no other option but expulsion. Some of the results of the report, entitled Permanent and Fixed Period Exclusions in England: 2016 to 2017, make for depressing reading. Those pupils residing in the poorest areas are apparently four times more likely to be permanently excluded - and (perhaps most concerning) children who have a recognised special educational need account for about half of all expulsions. The leader of the Head teachers union, the Association of School and College Leaders, Geoff Barton, was clear that funding cuts and restrictions of children`s services (such as youth clubs) are to blame for the recent rise in pupil exclusions: `Schools have had to cut back on the individual support they are able to give students, making it more difficult to provide early intervention, and prevent behavioural problems from escalating. At the same time council support services for vulnerable families have been cut back, meaning that schools are having to pick up the pieces. `Schools only exclude pupils as a last resort and when all other avenues have been exhausted. The government needs to provide the funding that`s necessary to provide support at an early stage.` The report revealed that 83% of expulsions took place in secondary schools - an interesting statistic in itself. The most common reason for expulsion was cited as Persistent disruptive behaviour. This reveals that pupils are most likely to be excluded for an accumulation of misdemeanours, committed over a period of time, rather than a single bad deed. School Standards Minister Nick Gibb commented that the government will be looking into the findings of the review, and will be developing alternative options for pupils who find themselves outside mainstream education: `Whilst we know there has been an increase in exclusions there are still fewer than the peak ten years ago. `We recognise some groups of pupils are more likely to be excluded than others which is why we launched an externally-led review to look at how schools are using exclusions and why certain groups are disproportionately affected. `We are also transforming alternative provision to improve outcomes for children in non-mainstream education, which is backed by a ?4m innovation fund.` 19 months ago0Add a Comment

The Proven 5-Step Formula for Masterful Reading in a Second Language

The Proven 5-Step Formula for Masterful Reading in a Second Language The Proven 5-Step Formula for Masterful Reading in a Second Language How do you approach reading in your target language? If you’re anything like me, up until now it’s all been a bit haphazard. You’ve heard that reading is a great way to improve your vocabulary. You think you should really create a daily reading habit. You know you should match reading material to your level. But which books should you be reading? How do you know if a text  matches your reading level?Luckily, help is at hand for “readers without a plan” like you and me. Researchers focused on second language learning have come up with some great ways to improve your reading skills.Yep, you heard me right. There’s a whole load of researchers out there finding the best techniques for you to become a better language learner. The Proven 5-Step Formula for Masterful Reading in a Second LanguageReading in your second language can be as fun or as challenging as you want to make it. However, one thing that it isn’t is effortless. You have to put in some work to get the most out of reading…but, boy, is it worth it when you do!Grab yourself a book!Lets say youve found something in your target language that you think you might want to read. Now what?Whether it’s a book, a short story, an article or just the back of a cereal box, follow these 5 easy steps and you can’t go wrong.1. Match Your Reading Level with This Powerful Technique.First, you need to make sure that the chosen text matches your reading level.“Yeah, right,” I hear you say. “People always say match your level. But how do I do that?”Well, it’s actually pretty simple.Language researchers have shown that you need to understand at least 95% to 98% of the words on a page to read it comfortably. They call this a “lexical comprehension level,” but you can call it whatever you like. How to calculate your comprehension levelSo, pick up your book now and read through one page. You should count:1. The total number of words on the page (we’ll call this “TotalWords”) 2. The number of wo rds you don’t understand (“UnknownWords”)Heres an example of what this might look like:TotalWords = 250 UnknownWords = 10Now, jump over to the percentage calculator and enter your numbers in the second row like this:“UnknownWords” is what percent of “TotalWords”?Now, hit that big Calculate button! For example, I filled out the calculator so it looked like the following line:10 is what percent of 250 ?Answer: 4%That means that I didn’t understand 4% of the words on the page, but did I understand 96% of the words (to calculate that, just subtract the number from 100).Is the book too hard for me?Here’s a little table which lets you know how difficult you’ll find the text based on all the numbers introduced above.% words you understood% unknown wordsExample (250 words per page)How hard will it be to read?less than 90%more than 10%more than 25 unknown wordsThis will be very difficult. Try something easier and come back to this later.90 to 95%5 to 10%13 to 25 unknown w ordsThis will be quite difficult, and you’ll have to use a dictionary quite a lot. Try using the “reading for challenge” tips later in this post.95 to 98%2 to 5%5 to 12 unknown wordsThis will be challenging at times, and you may need a dictionary. Reading at this level will be great for your language learning!over 98%less than 2%fewer than 5 unknown wordsThis is a good level to read at. You’ll enjoy it and still be learning new words, often using context to figure out their meanings (see below for how to do this).I was once told by a language teacher “if you don’t understand more than 10 words on a page, then you won’t enjoy the book.” Turns out she was right!2. Choose Between These 2 Types of Reading Material. Now that you’ve calculated the reading difficulty of your chosen text, its time to decide if you really want to read it.You need to ask yourself: Why do I want to read this? There are many reasons why you might want to read something, but there are 2 basic typ es of second language reading material:1. Reading for fun. 2. Reading to challenge and develop your reading levelResearchers call these extensive and intensive reading, respectively, and we’ve introduced the benefits of both  before. It’s important to remember that it’s best to vary what you read. Sometimes read for fun, sometimes give yourself a challenge. Each  type requires a different approach.3. Follow These 4 Rules When Reading for Fun.Just like when you’re reading in your native language, reading for fun (extensive reading) in a second language is all about enjoying the story. To maximize fun and learning while reading for fun, just follow these 4 simple rules:1. Pick a book where you can understand around 98% of the words (or more).Research shows that extensive reading is most effective when you start by reading a lot of easier books. Now isnt the time to challenge yourself. The first book I ever tried to read in Spanish was by Schopenhauer (the philosopher). That wasnt a good idea! I couldn’t understand most of the words on the page and it totally discouraged me from reading at all.Don’t make my mistake. Match your level (see step 1 above).Sometimes you can find simplified versions of more classical books. These can be really good options if you’re not ready for the original versions yet, but still want to dabble in more complex texts.2. Treat yourself. Read something you enjoy.Fun reading should be fun! Duh.If you like cheesy romance novels or popular page-turners in your native language then read these in your second language too. Nobody’s judging you (honest). You could even find a translation of one of your favorite books. This has some  added benefits: you’re already familiar with the author’s voice and the storys plot, so youll understand more of the text.3. Limit your look up words. One of the quickest ways to lose interest in any reading is to look up every word you don’t know. Give the dictionary a rest and limit yourself to r esearching 2 or 3 words per page. Beyond that, just ignore that unknown word, take your best guess from the context and look it up later if the word appears again. An e-book reader with an added dictionary makes looking up words faster but, even so, stick to only 2 or 3 words per page max.4. Reward yourself for finishingThere’s nothing better than finishing your first book in a foreign language! Well, finishing the second one feels pretty good too. Give yourself a big pat on the back and go and buy yourself something nice. A new book perhaps?4. Use This 6-Strategy Toolkit for Intensive Reading. The other type of reading is to read for challenge (intensive reading). This is where “reading strategies” come in. This basically just means that you have some sort of plan to read the text in an interactive way.Researchers have identified a whole load of great reading strategies that foreign language readers can use to boost their second language reading skills. Here are some helpful read ing strategies which you can start using right now:Pre-reading strategiesUse these before you read to improve your understanding of the text and get more involved.1. Write your background knowledge on Post-it notesBefore you start reading, write down what you think you already know about the text (in your target language preferably).Maybe you’re reading an article about French wine. On different Post-it notes, write what you think you already know about the country, culture and anything else related to the topic.2. Ask yourself questions about the textIn your target language, write down some questions for yourself about the topic and try predict what the answers will be before you start reading.Try to identify what you think the main ideas or concepts of the text will be. Make predictions about what the important details might be. Read the questions aloud to yourself.  After you’ve finished reading you can come back to these questions and describe how your answers have changed n ow that you’ve read the text.Reading strategiesThese let you get interactive with the text, making you really think about what it says.3.  Annotate the textYou know how your parents always forbid you to write in books?I’m giving you permission to ignore their rules. Annotating books is a great way to become an active reader. There are many things you can annotate in a text. A few examples are:a. Identify the author’s main points. Do this by underlining the key sentences, phrases or conclusions. Try paraphrasing the points and noting where evidence is used to back them up.b. Mark passages which are unclear with a question mark (?). Note what you don’t understand.c. Note how you react to the text. Write an exclamation mark (!) near passages you react strongly to and describe your objection, agreement or interest on a Post-it note.Come up with your own annotation system. There are endless possibilities!4. Guess the word meaning from contextAll too often we reach for the dictiona ry before we try to work out what the word means from the context.Look for clues about what the word might mean from the words around it. Take your best guess. If you feel reasonably confident with your guess then you can just keep reading and look it up again later.  Even if you get the definition wrong, don’t worry. Psychologists have found that the process of trying to remember  a word will improve your ability to remember the real definition later, even if you had to look it up!Post-reading strategiesAfter reading, these strategies help to cement what youve learned into your brain  by  making you actively reflect on the reading materials content.5. Write a summary of the textThis lets you find out how much you’ve understood from the text and what might benefit revision. Summarise the main points of the text and also how you reacted to them.Sites like Goodreads are great for this. They allow you to post online reviews (in whatever language you like) and also read reviews of o thers.6. Talk to people about the bookWell, why  do you want to learn a language? Dont you want to learn how to speak with people?Reading can be a very social activityâ€"just think how popular book clubs are. Take any chance you can to talk about what you’ve read with other people. Itll improve your understanding of the text and can also be the start of great conversations.5. Give Yourself a Break  and Beat Reading Anxiety. Finally, the most important detail. Dont  get stressed out when reading in a foreign language.Believe me, I know what it’s like to throw down a book in frustration because I can’t understand enough of the language. It can be really demotivating and makes you feel like you’ll never be good at the language. On the other hand, successfully reading a book in a second language can be one of the most rewarding feelings.Although reading might seem like a low-stress activity, “foreign reading anxiety” is a real thing (there are studies on it!).The remedy is pr etty simple. When reading starts to make you anxious, stop, breathe and take a break. Environmental Science Chemistry For All StudentsThe study of environmental science chemistry is relevant for all who work on the environment. It takes this subject a step further and brings together the analysis of the various factors that influence the environment, and how they interact with each other to ensure the health of the planet. In other words, the science of environmental science chemistry provides a path for students to become concerned citizens, and to assist them in finding ways to make their communities better. To succeed in this field, you must be motivated to learn about the environment, and your place in it. There are many different schools of thought, though the majority of these teach that the environment is part of nature, and that we have to keep it clean and well-maintained for it to continue to be such. This is certainly not true, and there are many reasons why. Because of the threats posed by some elements, the increasing pollution of the air and water, and th e depletion of soils, which makes the earth less fertile, most people consider nature to be the enemy and would like to see it eliminated from our lives. The study of environmental science chemistry gives you the tools to show the world that the environment is more than just what we see, and that it is part of a larger system, as well as an organism. The schools of thought about the environment can be divided into four major areas, with the first one being the most popular of all. This is called Ecological Sustainability, and it was first published in 1973. The next two are Physical Sustainability, and Social Sustainability.Ecological Sustainability says that the environment is important for everyone, and that it must be managed properly to ensure that it continues to exist, because humans need it too. When making decisions about what to do with the environment, these types of thinking should be used.On the other hand, Physical Sustainability views the environment as a thing that is actually solid, but not necessarily living. It would have to have a body in order to exert pressure upon the environment, and also respond to it. If this were the case, then the earth would not be round, because it would have to be hollow. These thinkers believe that the earth is round, and that it has a solid core, just like an apple, and that all that we see around us is simply the reflections of the earth's surface. The third school of thought, Social Sustainability, describes the environment as not actually part of the universe, and that it exists within the human population. There are those that believe that all the world's resources are accessible to everyone, so if everyone does not need it, it will go to waste. On the other hand, there are those that believe that the human population is the only resource that is sustainable, so that the world would not be so overpopulated and there would be enough to go around. This is because the only way that they could meet their needs, an d get out of poverty, is by having children. The study of environmental science chemistry teaches that all the elements that are needed to survive on the planet, are there, and are there to be found in sufficient quantities. Therefore, in order to sustain our lives, there must be a change in the way we think, and what is acceptable to our society, before it will be possible to reduce our dependency on resources, and improve the quality of life for all of us.
